Blood Pressure Checker — Understand Your Numbers (AHA Categories)

Enter the two numbers from your BP monitor and get the official American Heart Association category, what it means, and when to actually see a doctor.

Quick answer: Free blood pressure checker: enter systolic & diastolic readings to see your AHA category — normal, elevated, stage 1 or 2 hypertension — with clear next-step guidance.

⚠️ Educational tool — not a diagnosis. Persistent high readings belong with a doctor.

How to use

  1. Sit correctly — 5 minutes still, back supported, cuff at heart level, no coffee 30 min before.
  2. Enter systolic & diastolic — e.g. 118/76; take 2-3 readings a few minutes apart.
  3. Read the category — AHA classification plus sensible next-step guidance.

General information only — not medical, financial or legal advice. Figures cross-checked against public official sources (IRS / HMRC / NHS / WHO guidance); content last reviewed September 2026. For decisions that matter, confirm with a licensed professional in your country.

About this tool

Blood pressure is two numbers: systolic (artery pressure during a beat) over diastolic (between beats), measured in mmHg. This checker classifies any reading into the five American Heart Association categories — Normal (<120/<80), Elevated, Hypertension Stage 1, Stage 2, and Hypertensive Crisis — using the rule AHA actually uses (whichever number pushes you into a higher category wins). You get what each category means, home-monitoring tips that prevent false alarms, and honest red flags: this is education, not diagnosis — high readings need a clinician.

FAQ

What is a normal blood pressure?
Under 120 systolic AND under 80 diastolic is normal; 120-129 systolic is “elevated”; 130+/80+ starts hypertension stages per current AHA guidelines.
My reading was high once — panic?
No — BP swings with sleep, stress, coffee and even a full bladder. Categories need consistent readings across days; a single high number is a reminder to re-measure, not a diagnosis.
When is it an emergency?
Readings above 180/120 — especially with chest pain, shortness of breath, vision or speech changes — need immediate medical care. This tool flags it, but act first, browse later.
