JSON Formatter & Validator

Paste JSON — beautify, minify or validate instantly. Data never leaves your browser.

Quick answer: Free JSON formatter and validator: beautify messy JSON, minify for production, validate syntax with clear error locations. Runs 100% in your browser.

About this tool

A JSON formatter re-indents minified JSON into a readable tree, or compresses pretty JSON for production payloads. The validator pinpoints syntax errors (missing commas, unquoted keys, trailing commas) with line and column. APIs, configs and log files are full of JSON — this tool handles them without uploading data anywhere.

Beautify, Minify, and Pinpoint the Error (2026 Guide)

This page is the JSON formatter for people who need the error's exact character, not just "invalid JSON". Paste anything: beautify re-indents it into a readable tree, minify strips it to one wire-sized line, and the validator pinpoints syntax errors by line and column. Below is what each mode actually does to the same payload, plus the five errors you will hit most and the character that causes each.

The same data, three shapes

Take a minified API response like {"user":{"name":"Ali","roles":["admin","dev"],"active":true},"page":2} — beautify turns it into a 2-space indented tree where the roles array is visible at a glance and minify strips it back to a single line. The data never changes; only whitespace does. That is the whole job: pretty for humans reading it, minified for machines shipping it, and identical bytes of information either way.

The five errors this validator sees most

Broken JSONWhat breaksFix
{"age":25,}Trailing comma — parser chokes at the closing braceDelete the comma
{'name':'Ali'}Single quotes — JSON only accepts doubleSwap all ' for "
{name:"Ali"}Unquoted key — keys must be stringsQuote the key
{"x":NaN}NaN/Infinity are JS literals, not JSONUse null or a string
{"a":1 /*x*/}Comments don't exist in JSONStrip them before shipping

For the trailing-comma case, {"name":"Ali","age":25,}, modern browsers stop at position 22 — "Expected double-quoted property name in JSON at position 22" — which is exactly the character after the comma. The validator converts that position into line and column so a 5,000-line config points at the offending line instead of a needle-in-haystack hunt. Fixing configs by hand pairs well with running the result through the AES encrypt/decrypt tool when the payload also carries secrets, and checking diff side-effects with the text diff checker before and after a mass reformat.

FAQ

Why is my JSON invalid?
Common causes: single quotes instead of double, trailing commas, unquoted keys, and Python-style True/False/None (use true/false/null).
Is my API data sent to a server?
No — parsing happens with your browser's own JSON engine, locally.
How large a file can it handle?
Multi-MB payloads are fine; beyond ~10 MB browsers may slow down.
What's the difference between beautify and minify?
Direction of whitespace: beautify adds 2-space indentation and newlines so people can read the structure; minify removes every unnecessary byte so the payload ships smaller over the wire. The parsed data is identical either way — same keys, same values, same nesting — so you can safely toggle between them without changing meaning.
Why does JSON reject NaN and Infinity?
The JSON spec only defines decimal number literals, and NaN or Infinity are JavaScript runtime values with no textual JSON form. Serializing them produces invalid JSON by definition. Ship null (the conventional missing-value marker), a string like "NaN" if the distinction matters, or restructure the calculation so the value cannot be undefined.
Can the formatter fix invalid JSON automatically?
No, deliberately — a formatter that guesses what you meant will silently corrupt data (imagine auto-deleting a comma that was load-bearing inside a string). Instead the validator pinpoints the exact line, column, and character where parsing stopped, which turns a five-second fix once you see it. Precision beats guessing for config files.
