About this tool
The calendar method estimates ovulation about 14 days before the next expected period, with a fertile window of roughly the 5 days before plus ovulation day. Sperm survive up to 5 days, so the window matters more than the single day. Cycles vary month to month — this is an estimate, not contraception guidance.
Ovulation, the Fertile Window, and Test Timing (2026 Guide)
This calculator runs the standard calendar method: it takes the first day of your last period and your average cycle length, projects the next period, and works backwards. The output is three dates — next period, estimated ovulation, and the fertile window around it. Here is the exact math the engine runs, a worked example, and how those dates connect to when a home pregnancy test can turn positive.
The calendar math, exactly
The engine clamps cycle length to a sane 20–45 days (anything else falls back to 28), then: next period = last period + one full cycle from today's position; ovulation = next period − 14 days — the standard luteal-phase assumption; fertile window = ovulation − 5 days through ovulation + 1 day, a 7-day span. The window is what matters because sperm survive up to 5 days inside the reproductive tract while the egg lives less than 24: the days before ovulation carry the pregnancy risk and opportunity, not the day after.
Worked example: LMP January 1, 28-day cycle
| Event | Math | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Next period | Jan 1 + 28 days | Jan 29 |
| Estimated ovulation | Jan 29 − 14 days | Jan 15 |
| Fertile window | Jan 15 − 5 … + 1 | Jan 10 – Jan 16 |
Run your own dates above and the countdown line shows days until ovulation. Two honest caveats: the 14-day luteal phase is an average (real range runs roughly 12–16 days, so treat ovulation day as ±2), and cycle-length variation shifts everything — that is why the tool asks for your average, not textbook 28.
From ovulation to a positive test
Implantation lands about 6–12 days after ovulation, and detectable hCG follows it — not before. That single fact drives all test timing: early-result home tests (the "first response"-style early detection kind) can read positive for some people 5–6 days before a missed period, but a negative that early proves nothing yet. The reliable read comes on or after the day your period was due, with first-morning urine for the highest hCG concentration. Anything earlier is a coin you pay for twice. This tool estimates dates; it is not contraception, not a diagnosis, and cycle irregularity is a question for a clinician — the due date calculator takes over if the test turns positive.
