About this tool

This tool estimates the employer-side payroll taxes owed on New York wages: the 7.65 percent FICA match, federal unemployment tax at the 0.6 percent post-credit rate, and New York State unemployment insurance at the rate and wage base you enter. New employers typically receive a normal-rate assignment near 4.1 percent on a taxable wage base around 12,800 dollars per employee; confirm your actual rate and base on the Department of Labor notice and enter those figures. The Social Security cap and the UI base are applied to the average wage per employee, which is exact for even payrolls and approximate for mixed ones. Industries with frequent claims, such as construction and hospitality, tend to see higher assigned rates. Estimates reflect the rate and wage base entered; New York also levies taxes outside this scope; confirm with your DOL notice; not tax advice. Two New York specifics sit outside this estimate. The MCTMT, a metropolitan commuter transportation payroll tax, applies to some employers inside the metropolitan commuter district at a small rate on payroll above an exclusion threshold, so check whether your location is covered. Paid family leave is funded through employee withholding rather than employer contributions, which is why it does not appear in employer-side totals. The 12,800 dollar UI base is among the higher state bases.
