About this tool

The Empire State anchors its sales tax at just 4 percent, the lowest state base on this list, but counties and cities add their own layers, and New York City stacks 4.5 percent plus a 0.375 percent Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District surcharge to reach 8.875. Enter any combined rate and a price, and the calculator returns tax and total; flip the mode to Remove and a receipt total gives back the pre-tax figure. A 100 dollar sale at the bare state rate adds 4.00 for 104.00, while 1,000 dollars in the city at 8.875 adds 88.75 for 1,088.75. Groceries are exempt statewide, as are prescription drugs, and each clothing or footwear item under 110 dollars is tax-free inside the city. Outputs are estimates based on your entered rate; New York county and city add-ons vary. Confirm rates with the Department of Taxation and Finance. Not tax advice.County rates across the state span roughly 4 to 5 percent on top of the base, and a handful of counties even cap clothing exemptions in seasonal windows. Vendors charge tax based on where goods land, not where they originate. Because the city rate includes three separate components, receipts there often break the tax into lines.
