About this tool

Ohio's 5.75 percent state base is only the starting line; counties add their own levies, which is how the statewide average combined figure reaches approximately 7.2. Notably, no city may add sales tax here, so the county is the last word, a cleaner map than most states manage. The calculator prices either direction: 100 dollars at the bare base adds 5.75 for a 105.75 total, and at a 7.2 combined rate the same basket adds 7.20 for 107.20. A 400 dollar purchase at 7.2 carries 28.80 in tax for a 428.80 total. Groceries are exempt, as are prescriptions, and Remove mode reverses any total, dividing by 1 plus the rate to recover the pre-tax price from a receipt. Estimates depend on the combined rate entered; Ohio county levies vary and change with voter action. Confirm with the Ohio Department of Taxation. Not tax advice.County levies fund transit, jails, arts, and sports facilities, and they change occasionally when voters approve or retire a levy, in quarter-point steps. Cuyahoga County, home to Cleveland, sits at the top of the range. Border shoppers near Pennsylvania and Indiana sometimes cross county lines to shave fractions off large purchases.
