About this tool

Pennsylvania keeps things unusually simple: a flat 6 percent state rate applies everywhere, with only two local exceptions, Philadelphia at 8 percent and Allegheny County at 7 percent. Everywhere else, no local sales tax exists at all. This calculator prices all three scenarios. A 100 dollar sale at the flat rate adds 6.00 for a 106.00 total; 250 dollars in Philadelphia at 8 percent adds 20.00 for 270.00; the same 250 in Allegheny adds 17.50 for 267.50. Set the mode to Remove to reverse a receipt, so a 270.00 total unwinds to 250.00 pre-tax and 20.00 in tax. The exemption list is generous: groceries, most food, clothing, textbooks, and prescription drugs all ring up tax-free, which keeps many everyday baskets at zero even at the higher city rates. Estimates use the rate entered; only Philadelphia and Allegheny add local tax in Pennsylvania. Verify with the Pennsylvania Department of Revenue. Not tax advice.Philadelphia and Allegheny fund transit and local services through their add-ons, which is why the two figures date back decades and rarely move. Some items carry their own reduced rates, such as taxable food sold by restaurants versus groceries. Clothing is exempt here in full, not merely under a price threshold.
