About this tool

Repeating the same word weakens writing. This finder taps the free Datamuse API — the engine behind the popular OneLook tools — to return synonyms and antonyms ranked by real usage strength, not just dictionary order. It is ideal for tightening an essay, varying marketing copy, or teaching vocabulary. Only the single word you type is sent to the API; nothing else leaves your browser.

FAQ

Where does the data come from?
The free Datamuse API, built on large English corpora — the same source used by OneLook's reverse dictionary.
Why are results ranked?
By corpus frequency and relatedness — the top results are the strongest substitutes in real writing.
Does it work for phrases?
Best with single words; for phrases try the key noun or verb.
Are these exact synonyms?
Ranked 'related and replaceable in many contexts' — always sanity-check tone and register.
Is there a limit?
The free API is generous; only the word you type is sent per lookup.
Can I use results commercially?
Yes — word facts aren't copyrightable; the API is free to query.

Searching happy: synonyms, antonyms and related words ranked

The Synonym and Antonym Finder takes one English word and returns up to 24 synonyms, 12 antonyms and 8 strongly related terms, ranked by how people actually use them. Type happy and you'll get cheerful, glad and merry up top, sad and miserable in the opposites row, with related words like joy grouped underneath. Every result is a button — click merry and the whole board refreshes around that word, so you can wander from happy to cheerful to radiant in three clicks without typing again.

It shines when a word keeps repeating in a draft. My trick for essays: circle every repeated adjective, then spread the substitutes across paragraphs instead of dropping the fanciest option in place. Register matters — quipped is not a swap-in for said in a news report, and delighted overshares in a sympathy card. Don't fixate on the top result, either. The fifth choice often fits a sentence's tone better than the first one, and the related-words row is a quick way to spot the neighborhood a word lives in before you commit to one. Two minutes of this usually rescues a page that felt flat.

Synonym Antonym Finder questions, answered straight

Can I chain searches without retyping?
Yes. Each synonym, antonym and related word renders as a clickable button, so tapping one immediately runs a fresh search centered on it. Chasing happy to cheerful to radiant takes three taps and no typing — handy for building a word family before a vocabulary lesson.
Why did my word return nothing?
Empty groups usually mean a typo, a proper noun or an inflected form the corpus doesn't index. Try the base form — run instead of running, good instead of better. If the base word still comes back bare, it's simply outside the word list.
Is there a way to copy the whole list at once?
Not as one block — results are individual buttons rather than plain text. Select and copy them manually, or screenshot the board for a worksheet. If you're building study material, searching each word and noting results takes about as long as tidying a bulk export would.
Do results account for British versus American usage?
No — the rankings come from mixed English corpora with no regional filter. Most words travel fine, but a few skew British or American, so double-check that a replacement sounds natural to your audience. The related-words row is a fast sanity check for that.
