About this tool

Typing speed matters for jobs, exams and daily life. This test shows a passage, starts the clock on your first keystroke, and computes words-per-minute the standard way (5 characters = 1 word) with real accuracy tracking (correct chars ÷ typed chars). Live feedback turns practice into a game; the result screen shows WPM, accuracy and raw speed. Nothing leaves your browser. Your file never leaves this page — everything runs in your browser, there is no upload endpoint on this site, and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

Reading a 51 WPM result with 96% accuracy

The Typing Speed Test measures your words per minute and accuracy by timing you against a passage, starting the clock on your very first keystroke and stopping at the 60-second mark. Here's a real run: I typed 268 characters in that minute and got 12 of them wrong, leaving 256 correct. WPM counts correct characters divided by five, scaled to a full minute: 256 ÷ 5 = 51.2, so the screen read 51 WPM. Accuracy was 256 ÷ 268, about 96%. The result panel showed both numbers side by side, and neither one lied to me.

Don't chase raw speed on day one — accuracy is the lever that actually moves your score. Slowing down 10% often lifts your real number, because error-free typing means more correct characters land per minute and you stop retyping whole words. The passage changes on every restart, so practice against different text instead of memorizing one paragraph and riding muscle memory. Ten focused minutes a day beats an hour of Sunday cramming; I went from hunting-and-pecking at 35 to a steady 55 over a couple of months of exactly that.

Typing Speed Test questions, answered straight

When exactly does the timer start?
On your first keystroke, not when the page loads or when you click the text box. You can read the passage as long as you like before starting. The run ends 60 seconds later, and the result panel locks in your final WPM and accuracy at that point.
Do spaces and punctuation count toward my character total?
Yes — every character counts, including spaces, capitals and punctuation, in both the correct and total tallies. That matches the industry convention of five characters to a word, so there's no hidden penalty for comma-heavy text. Type exactly what you see for an honest score.
Why is my WPM lower than the raw characters I typed?
Because scoring only counts correct characters. Type 300 characters with 30 mistakes and your net is 270, which lands at 54 WPM over a full minute — not the 60 the raw count suggests. Speed without accuracy is borrowed score you pay back immediately.
Is the same passage reused every time?
No — the tool holds several passages and deals one at random on each restart, mixing workaday sentences with longer ones. That keeps you from memorizing patterns, which inflates scores without making you faster on real emails. Restart a few times and average your results.
