How to use

  1. Drop audio.
  2. Pick format.
  3. Convert → download.

About this tool

Every 'free audio converter' that uploads your file is a small privacy gamble you don't need to take: browsers now run FFmpeg natively via WebAssembly. Pick MP3 (192k) for compatibility, WAV (16-bit PCM) for editing, M4A (AAC) for Apple ecosystems, OGG (Vorbis) for open-source stacks — the conversion happens on your CPU, finishes in seconds for typical tracks, and nothing is stored anywhere. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

What a four-minute song weighs in MP3, WAV and M4A

The Audio Converter changes files between MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG inside your browser tab, so nothing gets uploaded to a server. Here's what the formats mean for a four-minute song — 240 seconds. At MP3 192k you're storing 24 kilobytes per second (192,000 bits divided by 8), so the file lands around 5.8 MB. The same track as 16-bit WAV runs at 44,100 samples per second across two channels, roughly 176 KB per second, coming in near 42 MB. M4A (AAC at about 160k) sits close to 4.8 MB, and OGG lands about the same. Bigger file, more headroom for editing. Smaller file, easier sharing.

One thing to know before you convert: this is re-encoding, not magic. Going from WAV or FLAC into any of these formats is a clean first compression. Going MP3 to M4A compresses an already-compressed file, and each generation costs a little fidelity you never get back. If your source is lossy, pick the target your player actually needs and stop there. And when editing is the endgame, keep a WAV copy of anything you care about.

Audio Converter questions, answered straight

Why is the WAV output so much bigger than the MP3?
WAV stores raw PCM: every sample of every channel, uncompressed. Stereo 16-bit at 44.1 kHz runs about 176 KB per second, so ten minutes adds up past 100 MB. MP3 throws away detail your ear mostly ignores to hit 24 KB per second. Same audio, very different math — that's the whole trade.
Will converting MP3 to M4A make it sound better?
No. Both formats are lossy, and the original detail is already gone. Re-encoding to M4A just compresses the remaining signal a second time, which can add its own artifacts on top. Convert to WAV only when an app demands that container, not because you're hoping for a quality upgrade.
Which format should I use for voice recordings?
MP3 192k is the safe default — every phone, car and laptop plays it, and voice needs far less bandwidth than music. M4A gives a slightly smaller file with similar clarity if your workflow is Apple-heavy. Keep WAV for when the recording feeds an editor or a transcription pass.
When does OGG make sense?
Pick OGG Vorbis when your destination is an open-source stack: game engines, Linux players, certain web pipelines. It sounds comparable to M4A at similar bitrates but isn't supported natively by Apple hardware or many car stereos, so keep MP3 as your everyday format and treat OGG as situational.
