About this tool

You recorded the meeting, the lecture, the interview — now you just want the sound. This extractor strips the video stream away and hands you clean MP3 (192k) or lossless WAV, computed on your own CPU. No upload means a 2-hour lecture is as private as a sticky note. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

A one-hour lecture as MP3 versus WAV

The Video to Audio Extractor pulls the sound track out of any video file and saves it as MP3 or WAV, entirely inside your browser. A real scenario: you recorded a 60-minute lecture. Extracted at MP3 192k — 24 kilobytes per second — the audio lands at about 86 MB. The same hour as 16-bit WAV costs roughly 635 MB, because PCM stores all 44,100 stereo samples every second with zero compression. Either way the video stream is simply discarded, so extraction finishes faster than the lecture ever played, and the file never touches a server. Stereo stays stereo throughout, too — nothing gets collapsed to mono along the way.

Format choice is the whole decision. MP3 192k is right for listening: phone, car, uploads to a transcription service. WAV is for work — audio editing, software that demands lossless, archiving something you can't re-record. One caveat on long recordings: a two-hour meeting as WAV sits north of 1.2 GB, and browser memory on an older laptop may grumble about it. Past the hour mark, MP3 is the sane pick. Transcription services in particular prefer MP3 at 192k: big enough to stay crisp, small enough to upload without pain.

Video To Audio questions, answered straight

Should I extract as MP3 or WAV?
MP3 192k for anything you'll listen to or share — small, universal, plenty good for voice. WAV when the audio will be edited, analyzed or transcribed professionally, since it's lossless. A one-hour lecture is about 86 MB as MP3 versus 635 MB as WAV, so pick by purpose, not habit.
Which video formats can I drop in?
Anything the browser's FFmpeg engine can decode: MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV, AVI and most phone recordings. The video codec doesn't matter because the video stream is discarded — only the audio track gets decoded and re-encoded to your chosen format. Damaged files fail with a message instead of a broken output.
Why did my video produce an empty result?
Most likely the file has no audio track — screen recordings made without microphone or system sound, or videos muted at export. Extraction can only pull what exists. Play the original first and confirm you hear something; if it's silent throughout, there's nothing for the extractor to save.
Does extracting reduce audio quality?
The decode is faithful; the MP3 encode is where a little fidelity goes, as with any lossy format — 192k is transparent for voice in practice. WAV output is lossless, so the audio arrives exactly as it lives in the video, just without the pictures. Stereo channels survive either way.
