FFmpeg afftdn denoiser + high/low-pass presets for clean voice tracks.

Real noise-floor estimation (PR mode) — the same class of filter used in pro pipelines.

Quick answer: Remove steady background noise (hiss, hum, AC, fan) from voice recordings with a professional FFT denoiser — right in your browser.

How to use

  1. Drop the audio → pick Voice / Music / Aggressive cleanup.
  2. Process → A/B compare and download.

About this tool

Voice notes and podcast recordings picked up in rooms with fans, fridges and street noise get a professional cleanup here: the afftdn FFT denoiser estimates the noise floor and subtracts it, while optional high-pass (kill rumble below 80Hz) and low-pass (hiss above 12kHz) filters carve out the rest. Try the Voice preset first — it fixes most recordings in one pass. All on-device. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

How the Voice preset cleans a noisy memo

This background noise remover strips steady noise — fans, fridges, hiss — from voice recordings using FFmpeg's afftdn denoiser plus high-pass and low-pass filters, all in your browser. Walk through a real case: a voice memo recorded beside a laptop fan. The fan's rumble sits below 80 Hz, so the Voice preset's high-pass cuts it outright; tape hiss above 12,000 Hz goes to the low-pass. In the mid-band, afftdn estimates the noise floor and subtracts it — the preset literally reads nr=12, nf=-25, meaning 12 dB of reduction toward a -25 dB floor. That's the whole recipe, and it fixes most room-noise recordings in one pass.

Resist the urge to start with Aggressive. It doubles the reduction to 18 dB at a -30 dB floor, and on thin phone audio that's where voices start sounding underwater. The Mild clean preset skips the denoiser entirely — it's just a 60 Hz high-pass and a 15,000 Hz low-pass — so if your only problem is rumble or hiss, not broadband hum, Mild keeps the most natural tone. Always A/B the output against the original before downloading; your ears catch artifacts a waveform won't.

Background Noise Remover questions, answered straight

What do the nr and nf values in the preset mean?
They're the denoiser's two dials. nr is noise reduction in decibels — how hard afftdn pushes — so 12 dB on Voice and 18 dB on Aggressive. nf is the target noise floor in dB, -25 or -30: the level the tool tries to pull the room down to. Lower nf plus higher nr cleans more and risks more processing sound.
Why does my cleaned file sound dull at the top end?
The Voice preset's 12,000 Hz low-pass is the likely culprit — it removes hiss, but it also trims some air and sibilance sparkle above that ceiling. If the original hiss was mild, run the Mild clean preset instead; its low-pass sits at 15,000 Hz and keeps more top end. Brightness you can fix in any editor; over-processed speech is harder to undo.
How long does processing take?
It depends on your machine, not a server queue — the audio never leaves the browser and runs through WebAssembly on your own CPU. A recent laptop handles a few minutes of speech quickly, while older machines take longer, and burying the tab mid-run can slow things down. The one-time engine download matters more than your connection speed.
Can I clean a voice memo recorded on my phone?
Yes — open the page in the phone's browser, pick the file from your recordings, and it processes on the device the same as on a laptop. Steady background noise like traffic hum, air conditioning or a fan is exactly what the denoiser targets. Just watch battery and heat on long files, since your phone's CPU is doing all the work.
