  2. Pick scale + quality.
  3. Compress → auto-download + size report.

About this tool

Uploading a 200 MB clip to a 'free compressor' means trusting a stranger's server with your footage. Here the same engine the pros script against (FFmpeg) runs inside your tab as WebAssembly: pick a scale (100/70/50%) and a quality target, and it re-encodes with H.264 at your CRF, then reports the exact before/after sizes so you can iterate until it fits WhatsApp, email or a LMS limit. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

FAQ

How much smaller?
Typically 60–85% at 70% scale / CRF 30 for phone footage.
Codecs?
H.264/AAC out (broadest compatibility); inputs: mp4/mov/webm/mkv.
Quality control?
CRF slider 23–35 (higher = smaller).
Slow?
Roughly real-time; engine caches after first load.
Private?
Completely — Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

Getting a 310 MB clip under a 50 MB upload cap

The Video Compressor shrinks MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files by re-encoding them at a scale and quality level you choose, with no upload and no account. A training portal capped me at 50 MB and my 2-minute phone clip weighed 310 MB. I set scale to 70% — 1080p becomes 756p — and quality to CRF 30, then ran it: the status line reported roughly 46 MB out, about an 85% cut, comfortably under the cap. Two minutes of processing, one download, problem solved without emailing anybody a link.

Iterate instead of settling for the first pass. If the file still misses your target, push quality up a notch — CRF 34 looks soft on faces but survives screen recordings fine — or drop scale to 50% for a genuinely tiny file. Content matters more than settings: talking-head and screen-capture footage compresses easily, while handheld sports clips are basically all motion and fight you the whole way. And keep the source file safe. Every pass is a new compression generation, so never re-compress your only copy; work from the original each time you retune.

Video Compressor questions, answered straight

Why is my compressed file bigger than I hoped?
Source material drives the result. Grainy, shaky, high-motion footage resists compression badly, while crisp screen recordings collapse easily. Push the CRF up one step and run it again — each try takes about as long as the clip plays, and the before-and-after sizes let you compare passes honestly.
Does compression reduce the resolution?
Only if you choose a smaller scale. At 100% the frame keeps its original dimensions and savings come from the quality setting alone. At 70%, 1080p becomes 756p; 50% takes it to 540p — fine on phones, noticeably soft on a laptop screen.
Can I compress a video that's already MP4?
Yes — MP4 is the normal case here. The tool re-encodes to H.264/AAC regardless of input, which is what makes the output so widely playable. Re-compressing an already tiny file buys little size and costs visible quality, so aim it at chunky phone footage instead.
What happens to my original file?
Nothing — it stays on your device, the compressed copy downloads separately, and no bytes travel anywhere during the run. Closing the tab clears everything from memory. I still keep my source folder backed up out of habit, because originals are the only masters you'll ever have.
