Auto silence detection + removal (silencedetect → aselect/select) locally.

Threshold and minimum-gap controls; keeps a full cut-log so you can audit edits.

Quick answer: Automatically detect and remove silent stretches from podcasts, recordings and screen captures — tighten a 30-min file in one pass.

How to use

  1. Drop audio or video → set threshold (-30dB default) & min gap.
  2. Process → download the tightened file + cut log.

About this tool

Screen recordings and voice memos are 40% dead air. This tool scans the track with FFmpeg's silencedetect (you set the dB threshold and the minimum gap to cut), then rebuilds the file without the silent stretches and shows you a log of every cut it made — total honesty about what was removed. Podcasts, lectures, Zoom captures all come out tighter. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

FAQ

Default settings good?
-30dB / 2s handles most voice recordings; raise to -40dB for noisy rooms.
Video supported?
Yes — video frames are cut in sync.
Can I review cuts?
Yes — the log lists every removed span.
Will it clip words?
Keep min gap ≥1s and padding protects word tails.
Private?
On-device. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

Tightening a 22-minute lecture by cutting dead air

The Silence Remover automatically detects and cuts silent stretches from an audio or video file in your browser, then hands you a log of every edit it made. Last week I ran a 22-minute lecture recording through it: threshold at -30 dB, minimum silent gap at 2 seconds. The log listed 41 separate cuts adding up to 6 minutes 40 seconds of dead air, so the export came out at 15 minutes 20 seconds. Same content, much tighter listen. I never opened an editor, and nothing was uploaded anywhere.

The minimum-gap setting matters more than people expect. At 2 seconds the tool leaves natural pauses alone and only eats proper dead stretches — right for lectures. Drop it to 1 second for a chatty podcast and it starts swallowing hesitation gaps too, which makes conversation feel rushed and clipped. My routine: run the defaults first, read the cut log, and only retune if a pause I wanted got eaten. The log shows every removed span with its timing, so nothing disappears blindly. Video files get the same treatment with frames cut in sync, so a rambling screen capture tightens up just as well as a voice memo does.

Silence Remover questions, answered straight

Which file formats can I feed it?
Anything FFmpeg reads: MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG audio, plus MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV video. The page sniffs the type on load and tells you whether it's treating your file as audio or video. Odd codecs occasionally fail — convert first if the status line complains.
Does cutting silence re-encode my file?
Yes — the tool rebuilds the file without the silent spans, so the export carries one re-encode generation. For voice content the difference is inaudible in practice. If you're archiving a master recording, keep the original untouched and treat the trimmed copy as your working file.
Why is a long video slow to process?
Everything runs locally through a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg, and the whole file gets analyzed and rewritten inside the browser tab. A 30-minute recording takes a few minutes on an average laptop. The one-time engine load only happens on your first visit.
Can I get the cuts back if I change my mind?
There's no undo, but you're never guessing — the log records every removed span, so re-running the original with a gentler threshold or a longer minimum gap restores anything the first pass was too eager about. Always keep the source; the export is a new file, not an overwrite.
