Quick answer: Build .srt subtitles with live speech recognition (Web Speech API) or manual timed lines. Export clean SRT, no upload.

How to use

  1. Press Start and play your video out loud (or dictate).
  2. Cues appear with timestamps; edit freely.
  3. Export .srt.

About this tool

Captions raise watch-time and accessibility, and the browser now ships a real speech recognizer. Press Start while your video plays out loud (or speak), and each recognized phrase lands on the timeline as a numbered SRT cue; edit any line, adjust times, export a standards-compliant .srt that YouTube, Vimeo and every editor accept. Manual mode covers languages the recognizer doesn't. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

Cueing your first SRT file to the second

The Subtitle Generator creates a timed .srt caption file from live speech recognition while your video plays out loud, all on your own device. On a 90-second product demo I hit Start listening, played the clip, and each spoken phrase landed as a numbered cue — a line recognized at the 4-second mark became 00:00:01,500 --> 00:00:04,000, since the tool gives each phrase the previous 2.5 seconds as its window. I fixed two misheard product names in the text boxes, hit Export .srt, and the file dropped straight into my editor's caption track.

Treat the recognizer as a first draft, not a stenographer. Brand names, jargon and crosstalk get mangled, so budget a proofreading pass — my 90-second demo needed six small edits before it shipped. In a noisy room, or with music under the dialogue, recognition degrades fast; the + Manual line button lets you add cues by hand with your own start and end times, which is also the fallback for languages your system's speech pack doesn't cover. Cue times live in editable number boxes, so a line that runs long is a two-second fix, not a re-record.

Video Subtitle Generator questions, answered straight

How close does the microphone need to be to the video's audio?
Close. Recognition runs through your microphone on whatever the speakers play, so crank the volume, cut background noise, and keep the mic near the source. If recognition keeps missing words, use manual lines rather than fighting the room — the exported format is identical either way.
Can I load an existing .srt file to polish it?
No — the timeline starts empty each session. You can build fresh cues here, or edit an old .srt in any plain text editor; the format is the same numbered blocks with HH:MM:SS,mmm timestamps. Keep a comma before the milliseconds and most players will cooperate.
What does the exported file actually look like?
Strict SRT: a cue number, one timestamp line with the arrow between start and end, the caption text, then a blank line — like 00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:07,200. Editors and the major video platforms read that format without conversion, which is the point of exporting rather than retyping.
Do I need to keep the video playing at normal speed?
Yes — cues are timestamped against real time from the moment you press Start, so sped-up or slowed playback would shift every line off sync. Play the clip once at normal speed, then stop and fix times in the number boxes if a cue runs long.
