EBU R128 loudness normalization with two real-world presets — quiet files fixed properly.

loudnorm measures perceived loudness (LUFS) and corrects it — not a naive peak/max-volume hack.

Quick answer: Normalize audio to professional loudness targets: Streaming −16 LUFS for YouTube and podcasts, Broadcast −23 LUFS for TV-style output. MP3 or WAV, no upload.

How to use

  1. Load an audio file → pick Streaming or Broadcast target.
  2. Choose MP3 (small) or WAV (lossless).
  3. Normalize → download.

About this tool

One episode too quiet, the next too loud — that is what normalizing fixes. This tool uses FFmpeg's loudnorm filter, the same EBU R128 loudness model broadcasters use: it measures perceived loudness in LUFS and corrects the level, so a whispered voice memo and a shouty phone recording both land at a consistent, comfortable volume. Pick Streaming −16 LUFS (YouTube, podcasts, Spotify-style) or Broadcast −23 LUFS (EBU R128 television standard), then export MP3 or lossless WAV. The engine (~30 MB one-time) runs in your browser. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

FAQ

What is the difference between the presets?
−16 LUFS is the de-facto target for streaming platforms and podcasts; −23 LUFS is the EBU R128 broadcast standard for TV/radio deliverables.
Is this peak normalization?
No — peak/max-volume tools only look at the loudest instant. loudnorm matches perceived loudness, which is what humans hear.
One-pass or two-pass?
Dynamic one-pass — practical in-browser mode. Mastering engineers run a separate measure pass; for uploads and podcasts this is the right trade-off.
Will very quiet files get hissy?
Heavy lifting can raise the noise floor slightly; WAV output keeps the rest lossless.
Private?
Yes — local only. Your file never leaves this page — processing runs in your browser via WebAssembly; nothing is uploaded and the file is dropped from memory when you close the tab.

Matching two podcast episodes at −16 LUFS step by step

The Audio Normalizer measures perceived loudness in LUFS and adjusts it to a professional target — −16 LUFS for streaming and podcasts, −23 LUFS for broadcast-style deliverables — using the EBU R128 model rather than naive peak boosting. Picture a two-episode podcast: episode one measures −24 LUFS, episode two comes in hot at −11. Run both through the Streaming preset and episode one gets lifted 8 LU while episode two is pulled back 5. Both land at −16. Same volume knob position for the listener, no more riding the dial between episodes — peak tools only see the loudest instant, while this one hears the whole performance.

One habit separates clean results from muddy ones: feed it the best source you have. Normalizing a low-bitrate MP3 that was already squashed just amplifies its artifacts — start from the WAV or the original recorder file when you can. For anything episodic, run every file through the same preset. A series normalized half at −16 and half at −23 sounds like two different shows, even though both are technically correct. A trick worth borrowing from radio: normalize first, then make your creative EQ and compression decisions on the level you'll actually publish at.

Audio Normalizer questions, answered straight

Should I normalize music the same way as voice?
Usually not. Mastered pop and rock often measures hotter than −16 already, so normalizing mostly pulls it down — fine for consistency, but expect a quieter result. Voice recordings and field audio benefit most from the treatment. For a mixed episode with intro music, normalize to −16 and let the leveler handle the whole file.
Why does my file sound quieter after normalizing?
Because loudness targets are conservative. If your source was mastered hot — aggressively limited so it feels loud at any volume — matching it to −16 or −23 LUFS means pulling the level down. That's the point: platforms level playback on their end anyway, and an over-loud file just gets turned down.
Does loudness normalization change the dynamics?
Far less than peak boosting does. The loudnorm filter measures integrated loudness across the whole file and moves the overall level, with only gentle movement on loud passages in the one-pass mode this tool uses. Whispers and shouts keep their relationship to each other; the average lands on target instead of the peaks.
Can I match a whole series of files to each other?
Yes — process them one per click with the same target preset and they'll sit at a consistent volume. Keep the source quality uniform too: a −16 series built from one WAV and one low-bitrate MP3 still sounds uneven, because the MP3's artifacts get normalized right along with the voice.
