  3. Start — watch the flash to internalize the downbeat.

About this tool

A metronome is only as good as its timing jitter; this one schedules clicks with the Web Audio clock (the same sample-accurate clock DAWs use) instead of sloppy setInterval guessing, so the beat stays rock-steady even if the tab gets busy. Accented downbeat, visual beat flash, tap tempo — everything a practice session needs, nothing it doesn't.

FAQ

How accurate is the timing?
Web Audio clock scheduling = sample-accurate; drift-free for hours.
Does it work with the tab hidden?
Audio continues; the visual flash needs the tab visible.
Why an accented first beat?
The downbeat accent keeps your place in the bar — standard practice feature.
BPM range?
30–250, covering Largo to Prestissimo.
Can I use it for dance/click practice?
Yes — steady click at any tempo, no time limit.

A tempo ladder from 80 BPM to 120

The online metronome plays a sample-accurate click at any tempo, with a tap tempo, adjustable beats per bar and an accented downbeat. Here's a practice ladder that actually works. Set 80 BPM with 4 beats per bar: 60 ÷ 80 means a click every 0.75 seconds, so each bar lasts 3 seconds. Play the passage clean twice, nudge to 90, then 100 — at 100 BPM the clicks come every 0.6 seconds. Keep climbing in tens until the target, say 120, where a click lands every half second. If the passage collapses at a new tempo, that's information: drop back 5 below your last clean speed and rebuild.

Tap tempo is the shortcut most players never notice. Play the recording you're learning, tap the button four or five times in rhythm with it, and the metronome settles onto that speed — no more guessing whether the track sits at 96 or 104. Then set beats-per-bar to match the music: 3 for a waltz, 6 for compound feels, so the accent lands where the downbeat lives. A metronome that accents the wrong beat trains the wrong pulse, and fixing that later is tedious.

Online Metronome questions, answered straight

What does BPM stand for, exactly?
Beats per minute — the count of clicks in one minute. At 60 BPM you hear one click every second; at 120 BPM, two per second; at 30 BPM, one every two seconds. Knowing the seconds-per-click makes slow practice easier to plan, because you can feel whether you're giving yourself 0.75 or 0.6 seconds between notes rather than just a number.
How does tap tempo work?
Tap the button in time with the music — four or five taps is usually enough — and the metronome follows the rhythm of your taps to find that tempo. It's the fastest way to match a recording you can't identify by ear. Tap on the actual beats, not between them, and redo the taps if you flub one; the result is only as accurate as your tapping.
Can it handle odd time signatures like 5/4 or 7/8?
Yes — beats-per-bar runs from 1 to 8, so 5/4, 7/8 and anything else in that range gets a proper accented downbeat. Set the bar length to match the piece and the accent teaches your ear where 'one' falls, which is the whole battle in odd meters. Count out loud for the first few bars; the click will hold you honest.
Do headphones actually make a difference?
More than you'd expect. Earbuds keep the click audible over a loud instrument — piano, drums, brass — where phone speakers vanish, and they spare everyone else in the house. Closed-back headphones are the pick for drummers, since they isolate both ways. One adjustment: keep the click volume low enough that it sits under your playing instead of startling you on the downbeat.
